Some of the way we talk about these issues underscores how weird and opaque academia is. For example, non-predatory organizations don’t tend to overcharge for conferences. Their costs are high; membership demands services and amenities that require $$.

To take another example, academia is actually overall better about providing info to job applicants than the US private sector. Yes, we *should* do better, yet I have heard/seen academics talk about this ias if academia is *worse* & that supposed inferiority require explanation.

Don’t get me started about journals. The whole thing is a house of cards. But academics routinely underestimate the costs associated with putting out a quality journal; open access hasn’t proven to be anything like the panacea some of its advocates claim.

Don’t get me wrong. I want all of these things to be better!!! I’m just noting that we’d benefit from more organizational transparency and from realistic understandings of how the private sector compares on the same activities.

Does your institution reimburse via faculty research funds for membership dues or registration fees? Mine does not. I wonder if membership and conference costs would go down if fewer faculty had access to subsidies that covered costs.
-
My units now provide a lump sum for which membership and conference costs are an allowable expense. But I don’t think this is a “college loans” dynamic; costs reflect expenses, which reflect demands from membership cc

It is another matter all together when you're trying to survive in a global field as a scholar from the Global South - even though we get better funding, even though everyone is trying hard. I paid around 9000 Rupees registration for a conference. (1)

I never used to apply for international conferences because even with funding, they are so expensive to attend. For all the wonderful helpful people I met at these conferences, I have gone to conferences and not eaten anything because I cld not afford to. (2)

I know you said "don't get me started," but the major conferences in my field that I attend have society membership + conference registration < $500. There are major journals now charging $5k+/article.

I can basically take most of my lab to a conference (including travel) for the cost of 1 paper. At least for me, there is a huge difference in scale, where conference costs feel pretty reasonable.

The cost of conference attendance is a serious problem, especially in terms of inequality.
