I've seen threads on how to improve your chances next time, success stories from people who attended lower-ranked programs, etc. Which is nice. One of the few good things about this hellsite: it facilitates talk among people at very different points in the academic journey.

Anyway, I've been on the PhD admissions committee a surprising number of times in my 17 years as regular faculty at GU. I've served as Director of Admissions and Fellowships. I'm on the committee again this year.

My subfield, International Relations receives hundreds of applications. We typical have two, t-w-o slots. We have a lower acceptance rate than the most selective undergraduate institutions in the country.

Something like 70% of the applications I see deserve admission. On my first pass I'm lucky if I can bring myself to eliminate half of the pool. I spend the entire process on the brink of despair, because there are so many strong applicants.
