And at least some of those obviously stillborn Stop Trump plans involved Republicans you might have heard of rather than a few anonymous randos within a party organization whose power is overestimated by Extremely Online people by a factor of about six billion

It still just blows me away every time I re-read this Kathleen Parker column from November 4, 2016

Yes, retaliating against media organization because they ask tough questions is a "perfect message" to send to countries with limited press freedom. 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

I could see them both being very annoying, but they're not top-tier on the "would have been really insufferable on twitter" list. Hobbes, Nietzsche, Rousseau, Schumpeter would be much worse.

It’s part of what makes the caste system in academia so pernicious.

If you’ve ever seen the “magic coffee table sketch” on YouTube, then recognize that tenure-line academics who work at institutions with reasonably good resources are often like that guy but about everything. Don’t @ me.

I wonder what other things about proper procedure & the rule of law Mr. “Article II allows me to do whatever I want” will figure out after *checks calendar* another three years in office.

I've handled a lot more PhD applications, and had to dole out a lot more rejections, this year than ever before. This thread describes a more extreme version of my experience. TLDR version... Lots of very able people get rejected. It's not you; it's the broken system.

I found a copy of my social security card tucked away inside a pair of wool socks. It’s probably been there for at least a decade. I can only conclude that past me was even odder than present me.

Did I mention not to get me started on journals? 🙂

I stopped reviewing NSF GRFP proposals because of this. None of my candidates were ever selected. It would have been more effective to just throw darts at the proposals and make awards to those which were hit.

Don’t get me wrong. I want all of these things to be better!!! I’m just noting that we’d benefit from more organizational transparency and from realistic understandings of how the private sector compares on the same activities.

Don’t get me started about journals. The whole thing is a house of cards. But academics routinely underestimate the costs associated with putting out a quality journal; open access hasn’t proven to be anything like the panacea some of its advocates claim.

To take another example, academia is actually overall better about providing info to job applicants than the US private sector. Yes, we *should* do better, yet I have heard/seen academics talk about this ias if academia is *worse* & that supposed inferiority require explanation.

Some of the way we talk about these issues underscores how weird and opaque academia is. For example, non-predatory organizations don’t tend to overcharge for conferences. Their costs are high; membership demands services and amenities that require $$.

✔️ The cost of conference attendance is a serious problem, especially in terms of inequality. ✔️ The fact that schools don’t routinely notify job applicants during their hiring process sucks. ✔️ Don’t get me started on journals. But, and yes, there’s a “but”....
