I think you need to separate "happiness" and "quality of life." I'd say in general (US-wise) poor people in the US are more comfortable and probably healthier than a rich person in 1870 (especially for women). Happiness, probably not.

I sort of intentionally conflated them, knowing they pull in different directions. Everyone can judge for themselves how they’d prioritize the two...

Dunno... Clicking the bottom button means I have to buy groceries, pay rent, seek healthcare and somehow survive on less than $12,500 a year. Clicking the top button means I don't get to vote but I *do* get to die of cholera.

The only rule I’d say is that it has to a be a country that was at a similar state of wealth in both time periods. For example, a country that was rich compared to other countries in both 1870 and 2019.
