Hello, my name is David. I would fail to write bubble sort on a whiteboard. I look code up on the internet all the time. I don't do riddles.

Valid point. Hopefully we won't get to the point where people take as much pride in ignorance about CS as they currently do about math.

Horses for courses. Some people need to know algos deeply. Info system programmers very rarely so.

we so desperately want (our work) to matter, so we interview for gods to feel like gods, and not what the job needs.

I'm amazed that expecting an absolute _minimum_ of CS knowledge from a programmer is now considered elitist. Bubble sort!!

The problem is asking the person to write Bubble sort and NOT asking lots of other relevant questions IMO.

I love the thought here, but what is the solution to hiring competent programmers then? Code tests online or in person?

neither. Coding tests are typically like hiring a novelist based on a spelling test. It leaves out the important details.

100% agree: the ability to write beautiful, well-architected code, drawing what works and discarding what doesn't, and learning from experience and others is far more important than wrote memorization (which our education system values over the former), is far more important #dev
