I remember visiting Niagara Falls and I stayed at the Hilton where they organized a trip for us. It wasn’t a cheap trip. On the bus for this trip there was a sign that said something like this: “your trip guide is not being paid much so make sure to tip him well”. What a joke..

One other point against tipping is that it externalizes part of the company's risk to the workers, since major part of the salary comes from tips. So if there's not enough customers for the day, the workers pay major part of that price.

I’ll add insult to injury. In UK, restaurants take the tip for themselves, and give peanuts to workers. One worker told me so, Next day at Pizza Express I asked and girl smiled and said: “ Here we’re lucky. The restaurant give us 40% of the tip!”
