Any gig-worker app that cannot make the business model work while paying $15/hour (after expenses!), basic benefits, vacation time, and family leave should not exist. Running a modern-day serf economy behind a slick UI is disgraceful.

This is the kind of exploitation we're talking about.https://twitter.com/dhh/status/1217950264168050688 …

To all the libertarian hacks coming back with "but gig workers CHOOSE to take these jobs; ergo, they're fine", please listen to

@dhh How do you reconcile that not a single gig worker is coerced into providing his/her labor? Are you saying that fewer options for workers is better? If so, why do so many choose gigs? No boss, flexibility, variety in work, etc. is part of the value prop for gig workers. -
Capitalism is an inherently coercive system when you have to work for food, shelter, education, and medicine. When the alternative to accepting shitty working conditions is to go hungry or become homeless, yeah, you take the shitty conditions.

I would love to create a decentralized ride-sharing/grocery delivery application that gives fair compensation to drivers. The tricky part is creating incentives for users to choose this over the cheaper, exploitative alternative.

The trick is unions, laws, and regulations. The magic of collective bargaining and democracy

What strategy would effectively reduce this kind of exploitation in a world that is online (where people from all corners of the world are willing to become the labor)?
-
The gig economy is not a global market place. It's inherently local. You're exploiting workers within your own country. Unions have ~two hundred years of history fighting this. Worker-protection laws have been on the books for even longer.

Gig workers have voluntarily chose to work in an industry that did not exist before. They did so against all other alternatives.
-
They voluntarily choose to sell their labor under atrocious conditions because the penalty for not doing so is fucking destitution. No one signs up to drive your ass around for sport or aspiration, or fetch your foods because they love the smell of curry.
