If Facebook & Google we’re banned from being able to target ads using their vast trove of personal data, we’d also have taken a huge step towards restoring competitive markets in internet advertising. Their unfair advantage would be wiped out. And they’d have to actually compete.

There’s not going to be one solution for all the problems of big tech, but banning targeted advertisement would go a very long way towards tackling many of the root causes. As the first action, this has my vote.
@RepCicilline, how about it

Does targeted advertising really work? Any solid data available compares it w/ non-targeted ads? I've always found targeted ads way off. Sometimes, I intentionally click on wrong ads (real estate in Burj Khalifa!) and they continue to bombard me with the wrong ones for weeks.

Can't we all just use all the privacy features Firefox and Brave give us? I have FF blocking & privacy turned up all the way, and I'm rarely bothered by advertising.

I'd be more interested in getting behind the banning of encryption. But I'll support the eventual nominee, whichever it is.

Wat? With what basis is this ever a good idea? Can you please explain?

My take is that targeted ads is best thing that has happened to ads. I do not want any untargeted ads going forward. My problem with current ad tech is that ads are not targeted enough and use wrong signals.
-
Instead of Google and Facebook having their own opinion on that I do I would rather answer surveys about my specific interests and have ads targeted against my actual answers, not the assumptions advertisers make about me.

When US v. MSFT got to terminus, a paper did a poll 'do you think MS is guilty?' 90% said no. 'Do you think a company that did ____ (what they were found guilty of) should be found guilty?' 90% said yes. Yet, the gov ended up DOING NOTHING. They won, then let the perp go.
