If Facebook & Google we’re banned from being able to target ads using their vast trove of personal data, we’d also have taken a huge step towards restoring competitive markets in internet advertising. Their unfair advantage would be wiped out. And they’d have to actually compete.

So by banning targeted ads, you take a huge step towards solving the monopoly issues with Facebook and Google (at least in the ads biz), you kill the incentive to be lax on misinformation, and you kill the incentive to collect and hoard personal data. Win-win-win

Targeted ads is a very recent phenomenon! It doesn’t have to be our final destination. We can look at the immense harm it has caused to competition and privacy, witness the social goods we lost (like local newspapers) and what we gained (Newsfeed?), and decide this was a mistake!

We decided asbestos was a mistake. That smoking in bars and on airplanes was a mistake. That cars getting 10mpg was a mistake. Targeted advertisement is a societal-scale mistake of which we are still unraveling the horrific consequences. Time to ban.

There’s not going to be one solution for all the problems of big tech, but banning targeted advertisement would go a very long way towards tackling many of the root causes. As the first action, this has my vote.
@RepCicilline, how about it

Wouldn't ads become more expensive if they are not targeted?
