I get that it’s hard these days. You have billionaires in hoodies, so spotting who’s agitating for your benefit vs their own book is harder than in the last gilded age of robber barons. But the fundamental dynamics haven’t really changed that much, the cloaks are just better.

In the real estate world, I often hear/read "how do I get my employees to care as much as I do?". My response is always you do not unless you give them ownership in the company. It is absurd for any business owner to want or expect an employee to care as much as he/she does.

Even that is absurd. Just because you get a few crumbs of the ownership pie does not put you in the same boat as the person cutting themselves the fattest slices.

Why not encourage people to become the company owner instead? Be the change you want.

Because that’s feel-good bullshit that still doesn’t scale. If everyone is their own boss, every company in the world would be a one-person shop.

Ownership which is proxy for reward is important distinction. When it's your own business lines are easy to blur, becomes more about work/life integration rather than balance or split.

Most people who are awarded ownership are merely enjoying the crumbs of the cake. Building true wealth as a late employee, even with generous options, is exceptionally rare.
