Partly agree with you. But small companies need to grow and be big companies some day. Shouldn't they adopt sustainable practices early that allow for flexibility and adaptability?

They need to do no such thing. Small is not a stepping stone. But even if they do, acting like a big company while you’re not will prevent you from becoming one.

Small companies don’t just need the mini version of whatever maxi protocol or approach that large companies use. They more often than not need to do the complete opposite.

Id rephrase it a little. A quickest way to ruin the productivity of any company is adopting the practices of another out of context. Context being size, business domain, budget, culture, and so many other things.
-
Very well said. Really the important thing is to act accordingly. I don’t know why small companies are afraid of processes...they’re not bad if you ensure they’re relevant to you but working without any at all can really be very costly In the long run.

Small companies base on people. Large companies base on processes. There must be some switch between.

100%. Worse, large companies often claim to base on people, but don’t.

That sentence reminds me of a blog post I wrote a while back where the premise was "You're not Google (unless you're Google)". The post even uses a Rails app as a basis for how successful you can be with a monolith.https://nickjanetakis.com/blog/microservices-are-something-you-grow-into-not-begin-with …

There are a lot of processes and technologies that exist in big companies that are simply a consequence of being big and aren’t better solutions to problems. Small companies that copy them thus gain all of the cost and didn’t even need the so-called benefits.
