I’m sure GitHub had all the right intentions here. And I’m sure this will work out well for a select few developers who will amass enough donations to ignore individual claims to their time. But I think it’s a grave risk to the culture of open source.

There is of course also the risk here of GitHub (read MS) trying to become the payment platform for OS devs. Github would be to devs what YouTube/patreon is to creators. Not a good development long term.

You're kind to grant Microsoft the benefit of the doubt, even when it comes to intentions.
Seen it small-scale turn consensus-driven-development into a bounty-driven-development... The result was "scrap the bounty system, it hurts everyone's interests". And I did think "it's a great idea!"... Little thought is harmful indeed.
