Employees knew that the kids were being exploited, and that they were overwhelmingly likely to confuse the in-game charges with game money, not real money. But Facebook just kept profiting from the confusing and kept denying refunds. This is a sick company.

Every day you’re using Facebook, you’re voting with your presence and attention for “more of this please”. Make 2019 the year you start doing less of that. If you’re unable to quit entirely, cut back. If you’re a business, consider going

Don’t forget there is another party involved, which are the game developers. They live off of those whales (which is industry standard naming for big spenders) and you have an obligation to mediate as a middleman. What i wonder is why on earth you have a CC connected to fb?
-
the CC was required to buy FB credits, but FB stored the CC on its system by default as part of the first transaction to allow automatic future transactions without additional authorization by the parent or guardian. Kids just thought they were using the credit.

Cell phone and social media games are the worst. I'm a 41 year old gamer and I sometimes can't tell when they charge money and when it's in game money.

Parents were shocked that 5 y old used facebook? Really? Stupidity costs. 5 y old should not access any media device without parent's assistance. They are unresponsible as parents.
-
I don’t know if you have kids, but it’s literally impossible to keep an eye on your child 24/7 unless you want to give up your very own existence.
-
yeah, but it's very easy to keep an eye on your phone 24/7

Except a phone isn't the only platform the games are available on.

This is why we have lockscreens.

And passwords

Kids are remarkably observant, and can guess a lot of your pins on the phone.

Apple does this too-my daughter once spent $150 on-I kid you not, smurfberries and it took me awhile to get a refund. They told me i to change my settings so any purchases had to be approved. I had no idea until it happened that she could spend money in a game.

-
Well Apple’s parental controls is pretty solid with iOS 12 and screen time. You just need to set it up correctly. You can even hide the “Appstore” app completely, restrict purchases, installs, uninstalls completely.
-
It is now, but this was about 8 years ago.
Believe me, I locked it down. -
Yeah. iOS wasn’t this fancy and all, 8 yrs ago.

(Not to excuse this or the colloquialism but "whales" is the standard term for big-spenders in free-to-play games. Facebook is fucking evil. But they didn't come up with that term.)
-
It's not about the choice of the word, but who they used it on - as well as their delight in having 5yr whales. (The article clarifies that the term is not new, but from the Casino industry.)
