Also: "If you already have a custom domain on Medium, nothing will change for you for the foreseeable future, and your domain will continue to work as expected". What a shitty way to sow doubt amongst existing publications. Signal vs Noise is OUT the second this changes.

And the strong implied suggestion that this will change, Medium's "foreseeable future" seems to be about a fortnight, should we prod all publishers to have their contingency plans ready to go. What a shame.

Three years ago we explained why moving Signal v Noise to Medium made sense to us. I'm very happy with the time we've spent on the platform so far, but the choice wouldn't look so simple today.https://m.signalvnoise.com/signal-v-noise-moves-to-medium-c8083ce19686 …

After further review, we're going to be leaving Medium at some point in the near-to-mid-term future. Thanks for all the fish,
@ev! You built a beautiful typewriter, the early community was awesome, and I respect trying something different. Shame about the VC pressures. Adieu!Show this thread

Yet again, I'm glad I control my own domain.

Amen! Having your own domain is key. We wouldn't have tried Medium without it.

Yo
@JohnONolan , how easy is it to migrate a publication Medium -> Ghost? Just in case -
Almost impossible because Medium have the single worst export format in the business. A mess of HTML files which all link back to http://Medium.com and don’t even include proper dates, tags, or anything useful. And no public API either of course.
-
We'd just scrape the pages as they look now and keep the URLs as they were on our own server. But yeah, having to do that is a hassle.
-
This sounds like a good opportunity for a little niche service. I think I might sign up for medium just to test out exporting, scraping and putting together usable packages for other blogging systems.

I wrote this guide (you’re mentioned) that describes exactly how to use your own domain and then import to medium for whatever worth it gives you.https://sendcheckit.com/blog/why-you-should-put-your-content-on-medium-and-your-own-domain …

That was a really insightful & useful post. Thank you!

Glad you liked it! I think it’s important that writers control their work.

I’ve been really happy with

Medium is far too politically biased to be reliable for anyone but the Huffington Postest of publications.

Do you see value in someone cross posting articles from their own website/blog to Medium?
-
That’s what
@edXOnline does for the engineering blog. We post to the Wordpress site for accessibility and import to Medium.

Per comments here on platforms you control, WordPress is a logical fit both for freedom of movement and owning your content (and we support custom domains!). Easy import via http://wp.com paired with the "Independent Publisher 2" theme for a Medium-esque feel.
