This. It is like a pervasive sickness in peer review.

I think the real lesson of places like DeepMind, Janelia, and Allen Brain Inst. is the amazing things scientists can do when you actually give them the resources they need to do their work properly, instead of spending so much energy hustling for cash/resources.

IME it is almost always the olds whose phones ring in the middle of meetings. And they don't silence it after that, only to have it ring again in the same meeting!

As the 2019-nCoV infection just started spreading, these researchers confirmed that the coronavirus uses the human ACE2 receptor for cell penetration. The best part? We don't have to wait 6 months to read about this. Preprints matter.

What it takes to publish a paper has dramatically changed over the past 2-3 decades. The 2020 expectation of exponential # figure panels required to publish a paper is getting a bit ridiculous, especially given the fact that NIH R01 modular cap of $250K hasn't changed since 1999.

An astrophotographer has clicked an exceptional video, wherein we can feel the rotation of the earth Using a tracking mount, aligned with North Star, he kept clicking images every 12 seconds for the next 3 hours. The camera is looking at the same portion of the Milky Way Fab!

Lots of insects stay hidden by looking like leaves, but this grasshopper is turning the dial up to eleven. Second pic cropped in so you can take a closer look. The "holes" in the dead leaf are actually not holes, but transparent areas. (Borneo)

NIH-funded postdoctoral position available at Brown University to study epigenetic predictors of neurodevelopment in a sample of very preterm infants. This is an incredibly rich dataset that includes multiple waves (!) of epigenetic data.
