        At the very least, they need to add a device, kernel and vendor repository. They probably have changes to the AOSP code beyond that too.

        It's possible they're using AOSP + device support + Google Play with light modifications like Google but equally likely they're using CAF.

        There are some Google apps, Google extensions to AOSP apps & resource overlays tweaking AOSP that are only for Nexus / Pixel devices anyway.

        Essential probably has their own camera app for example, since Google Camera with HDR+ is specific to Nexus and Pixel devices for one thing.
