John McAfee tried to fool a bunch of media outlets that he could read WhatsApp messages after they adopted the Signal Protocol.

In reality, he just used two pre-rooted Android phones with malware on them. Cybersecurity Ventures took the bait: http://cybersecurityventures.com/whatsapp-message-hacked-by-john-mcafee-and-crew/ …

Forbes story was written by CEO of Cybersecurity Ventures. Forbes needs better oversight of its contributor network.

thanks, saw it was the same article and author but didn't dive into it past that. Definitely agree on the Forbes point.

yep, on device messages are NOT encrypted on iOS as well. Anyone with access to phone/cloud/backup can read messages.

@paultag So, he could read them. In the same way that .gov will read them. Pointing that out worthwhile.

I say .gov - .cn/.ru etc. of course just as likely, depending on who you're annoying.

Yes, but that's not the point :) It's easy to own a single person. Safe cryptosystems help prevent dragnets.

It's disingenuous to say this is a whatsapp vuln, it's not, it's an infrastructure issue, which I bet you agree with.

Well yes, but that's only a useful distinction to make if you're only comparing WA to other apps in same ecosystem...

I think most secure protocols have this issue; TLS secures a password, but it's captured if you have a keylogger
