Once a phone is hacked (locally [w/ app] or remotely [link, mediaserver/SF, libxslt,...]) attackers can gain access to the messages.

Signal protocol is not the cure to everything. The *only* advantage is that it is stored encrypted on whatsapp's servers. That's it
