Mr Solnik says it will take hardware changes to prevent FBiOS from working against future iPhone models. Can't patchhttps://twitter.com/msolnik/status/701638682638315521 …

@riskybusiness A7,A8,A9 cannot be fixed. A10 if Apple makes a way too last minute architecture change and pushes their release back by 6m.

@riskybusiness @msolnik not true, they could change PBKDF iterations in software and slow down brute force attempts easily w/ sw update

@dguido @riskybusiness how does that fix the ability to upload a signed ramdisk/SEP firmware disabling the limiting?

@msolnik @riskybusiness it doesn't, but those protections would not matter as much if it took whole seconds per passcode attempt.

@dguido @msolnik now that's an interesting idea... Reckon users would be ok with waiting a couple of seconds to unlock their phones tho?

@riskybusiness @dguido @msolnik could also allow a decrypt boo time pass phrase different from unlock PIN. That would help a lot.

@dguido @riskybusiness and the only way to limit it to whole second would be with a hardware change. Hardware allows fast input now...

@dguido @riskybusiness if I have code exec on 32 - 80ms. Code exec in SEP... Then whatever the exact hardware performance limit is there...

@nzkoz @dguido gotcha. Not sure if that's software or hardware on 64. You are right on 32 they could just increase/add another kbag layer.

@msolnik @dguido the key for pbkdf2 is in the enclave, there’s no key read API, so I’m 99.999% sure it’s pure hardware cost of 80ms.

@nzkoz @msolnik software can't lower the iteration count. Once you derive the key from a passcode, that's it, you have to deal.
