It is clear that the study/article is not representative. Top earners on HackerOne earn MUCH more. It is true that the rewards are pareto distributed. The good news is that great hackers can quickly rise in the ranks and earn well. It is a merit-based system.

Where’s the ~170k I made in the public yahoo program that year? Was yahoo data not used?
Why do you have so much trouble believing that your high earnings are an outlier? Even HackerOne’s CEO admitted that payouts follow a power law. The difference in yearly earnings between even the 0.1% and 1% is dramatic.

I think the 1% is based on false numbers. Sure, there may be thousands of accounts registered on the platforms, but that doesn't mean they are actively hunting. There are probably less than 500 that actively hunt at any point in time.

Because I know of atleast three other people that year, 2015, (my first year doing bounties) who made much more than me. And it doesn’t seem like our data was used at all. Considering I made 170k on a public program. You stated top 6 only reported 1.17 bugs a month. Impossible
