Inheritance should be illegal. You deserve nothing from your parents' deaths. #confessyourunpopularopinion

@dgrey0 With all due respect, that's really stupid. At least it's a legitimately unpopular opinion, unlike most of these hashtag ones. :P

@bhelyer I think inheritance is stupid. It encourages classism and reduces social mobility. But yeah, not a popular opinion ;)

@dgrey0 It's not just unpopular, it's ill thought out. What happens to the assets? What about sentimental but valuable ones? Who decides?

@bhelyer All money to charity or government. Assets <£5k per item can stay with executors, rest auctioned off.

@dgrey0 What about land? This is swatting a fly with a nuclear fucking bomb.

@bhelyer Land and property sold (potentially to family at a discount?) This already happens when there's inheritance tax.

@dgrey0 I will point out that estate dues aren't a thing here.

@bhelyer Could be part of our difference of opinion :) Also I've seen too many families fighting over inheritance before the parent's dead.

@dgrey0 So people living at home because they can't afford to live elsewhere should be made homeless when their parents die? Harsh.

        0 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
      2. Darren Grey ‏@dgrey0 7 Aug 2013

@overwound This already happens to people with parents renting, or if they're not the beneficiary of the will.

      3. Darren Grey ‏@dgrey0 7 Aug 2013

@overwound Why heap more entitlement on those from richer families?

        0 replies 0 retweets 0 likes
      4. Olly ~ Overwound ‏@overwound 7 Aug 2013

@dgrey0 Renting/non-benefic's = different problem. Rich/entitlement = different issue, they'd sidestep your proposal which punishes poorest.

      5. Darren Grey ‏@dgrey0 7 Aug 2013

@overwound Why is it a different problem? Why is there only a safety net for rich families?

@dgrey0 @Ludonaut Good thing that my parents can make me co-owner of their house to circumvent this.

@SenorKaffee @Ludonaut There's certain deprecation of assets rules already in place to prevent this.

@SenorKaffee @Ludonaut I should clarify, I mean in UK law. Every country is different.

@dgrey0 i've been saying this for a while, obviously it wouldn't work in isolation and it'd be difficult to enforce but it could solve a lot

@st33d @smestorp There are multiple cases of inheritance helping people get on the property ladder. And thus raising prices for all of us :(

      5. Tomb Berry ‏@CdreSchmidlapp 8 Aug 2013

@dgrey0 @st33d @smestorp Is this a jest, or are you suggesting that: 1. amass wealth 2. pay taxes on it when alive 3. lose it in death?

      7. Stupid Name Month ‏@st33d 8 Aug 2013

@CdreSchmidlapp @dgrey0 @smestorp the sensible thing to do is to distribute your wealth before you die - not pay taxes on it again

@st33d @CdreSchmidlapp @smestorp People spending whilst alive is better for the economy than families amassing wealth over generations.
