After seven amazing years in Boston, I am both sad and excited to (finally) be able to officially announce that I'll be returning to my native Australia in 2020 to start a new adventure!
I'll be directing a new centre for population genomics as a partnership between the Garvan Institute of Medical Research in Sydney and the Murdoch Children's Research Institute in Melbourne, bridging two world-class research institutes in the two largest cities in the country.
The Centre will build the tools and resources needed to implement population-scale genomic medicine in Australia, a country of 25 million people with a universal healthcare system, rich ancestral diversity, and a vibrant and collaborative human genomics community.
We'll be formally launching in May 2020. We're recruiting computational biologists, statistical geneticists, software engineers, trainees, and much more. Job ads are coming soon, but if you're keen on doing population-scale genomics in Sydney or Melbourne, DM me.
This decision is bittersweet. I couldn't have asked for a better home than @broadinstitute and MGH over the last 7 years, and couldn't be prouder of the things my team has achieved. But Australia is where my family and heart is, as well as some amazing scientific opportunities.
Fortunately the work we've done in Boston will continue. gnomAD will keep getting bigger and better, and doing new science, with @HeidiRehm and @dalygene as co-directors, and a steering council including me, @bmneale, @TalkowskiLab, @AnneOtation, Grace Tiao and @mattsolomonson.
And the Center for Mendelian Genomics and Rare Genomes Project will keep sequencing thousands of rare disease families each year, under the leadership of @HeidiRehm and @AnneOtation - and I'll stay involved in developing and applying new methods for rare disease diagnosis.
Enormous thanks to so many people - my lab members, past and present, a remarkable set of human beings; the senior staff who've kept the ship on track; our many collaborators; and the men and women of the @broadgenomics and Data Sciences Platforms.
Special thanks to @Jalfoldi for her tireless work on gnomAD and many other projects, and to @HeidiRehm and @dalygene for their incredible support over the years, as well as their willingness to take on even more work to ensure the team can continue to thrive after I leave.
I'll be in Boston until the end of the year, and then working part-time in Sydney and Melbourne from January until the Centre formally launches in May. Looking forward to getting started!
