Didn't think someone was going to actually test me on my bold "I know where to point you" claim. I'll give it a shot! 1) On functions check out and

Coming to realize that one of my unique skills in the R world is knowing where to point people to for more info. I definitely don't know how to do everything in R, but I can likely tell you where to go to learn more about a topic.

    5) Automation can often lead to spin-off gains that are not apparent when you first start automating.

    4) Automation = documentation. Having code that allows you to do something in an automated way also walks others (and future you) through the steps you used to solve the problem in the first place.

    3) It's very easy to underestimate how many errors take place in non-automated processes.

    2) Writing code that automates can be helpful in thinking more deeply about the problem you're solving.

    1) Automation often seems more efficient, but can easily spin out of control, particularly when you have to maintain code that automates things later on.

Things I learned from this: I'm definitely not the only one and y'all have a lot of feelings about automation. Thanks for all the responses! Here is a short thread of the main themes I saw.

I've got a problem that I suspect others in the community have as well. How do you allow yourself to NOT automate everything? I get so focused on automating processes that I sometimes spend more time automating than I would doing them manually. Am I the only one?

I've worked on this report for the last couple years. I've automated most of it, but never the many tables that are part of it. Join me this Thursday as I try to save myself hours of work in InDesign by figuring out how to make pretty tables in .

One of my favorite ways to teach programming is using "I do, we do, you do": 1️⃣ I DO: Learners close their laptops to a 45 degree angle, and watch me live code and narrate my thought process. We discuss any questions.

Curious if folks have conferences they think would be worth me attending? I'd like to connect with individuals and organizations that might like to learn . I'm a social scientist by training so anything that deals with people is most up my alley.

Really enjoyed being on this panel. One thing I didn't get to add, but may be useful for those wanting to do consulting: Focus on outcomes, not tools. Folks who hire you may not even care that you use R, but if you can automate tedious work, that's a huge benefit!
