Look at the history of agriculture over the last 100 years: a shift in productions, plus soaring productivity, meant vast swathes of farmland in North America and Europe was allowed to revert to farmland. Reverse eating patters, reverse that.

Growing up on a farm in Northern Ontario, we ate local. About 10 months each year with no fresh fruit or vegetables. (Except "Japanese oranges" at Christmas). I'm not going back to that.

Same here, also in northern Ontario. The school gave each kid an orange at Christmas and it was a very big deal.

Much of the eastern United States was reforested in the last century as agricultural productivity rose and shifted to better-suited producing regions. Same in Canada. Same in much of Europe. All-local would reverse that process.
