Fun vax fact: Haemophilus influenzae type B (Hib) was the most common cause of meningitis in children <5 prior to the vaccine. 20,000 cases a year, 4% died. A third left w/ neurologic deficits. Since the improved vaccine in '87, cases have decline by 99%

This disease was once the scourge of pediatrics. Thanks to Hib + pneumococcal vaccines, bacterial meningitis is now very rare. All of this happened in the last 30 years. Nothing to do with hygiene or nutrition. #vaccineswork #VaccinesSaveLives https://bit.ly/2HQuCky

I started residency just after the Hib schedule changed from 18 m to starting at two months. Several people 2 years ahead of me in training had done more lumbar punctures in infants in a SINGLE NIGHT than I did during my entire 3 years. That vaccine changed pediatrics overnight.

My dad is a general pediatrician and it's crazy to think he did hundreds of LPs in residency, now residents do maybe a dozen in 3 years.

Hi, is this a government vaccination? Apparently there is a costly private vaccination for R900 against meningitis?

In the US, insurance generally covers the cost of vaccines that are recommended by the CDC. I cannot speak to other countries though

I have a tracheostomy scar from H. flu type B. Comes in handy for show-and-tell. Not with AVers but with parents whose kids have had their vaccines.

And let us not forget our good friend, epilotitis...the pediatric anesthesia airway emergency that makes many of us sweat. H. flu was a big culprit. #VaccinesCauseAdults

Also...isn’t it logical to think that some vaccines are more effective than others? Also that the risk of some diseases like meningitis are much more alarming than say chicken pox? So while some may be “saving lives” others are merely just “preventing mild infections?”

It's not an unreasonable thought. However, chickenpox (VZV) used to cause 100 deaths a year prevaccine. It was also a leading risk factor for pediatric stroke. And VZV reactivation is associated with stroke in adults. VZV is not so benign.https://bit.ly/2HegfWW

#vaccines are the one of the most significant contribution to medicine in history! They have allowed millions to grow up and complain about vaccines as adults. Please allow the next generation that opportunity and #VaccinateYourKids
