Getting my HAM Technician's license revealed two things: (1) those electrical engineering classes from undergrad decades ago were actually really useful. (2) if you are feeling old, amongst your peer group, taking a HAM test will fix that.

I just got something delivered via mailing tube. In the interest of recycling the packaging...the first educational program (in need of a few avalanche probes to take people out to measure snow) that emails me at dfh@oregonstate.edu will get some. Courtesy .

We've got our first data-collection contest spinning up on Sunday. You've got a month to submit as many snow depth values as possible. (1) they must be at least 100m apart to be valid. (2) they must be submitted with the Snow Scope app (see QR code below). Prizes in first comment

So, let's look at the CURRENT Sierra snow. Consider the Virginia Lakes SNOTEL, which is near Tuolumne Meadows. Blue is max; pink is 1997 (which serves as the Dec-Jan max!!), and black is right now. It would be great if it would not rain for awhile. Please...

One of the most amazing climbing trips I ever took to Yosemite was in early 1997. The park had JUST re-opened after the epic flooding in the Valley. Camp 4 was a ghost town. If you've tried to stay there, you know how rare that is. The classic routes were all empty. Not bad. 🧵

All of you faculty complaining about students showing up to class? You need to schedule your classes for the first day of winter term at the rec center. Holy smokes. Gold stars for everyone.

Where are the glass half full and the glass half empty states? We're doing a 'guess the snowpack' contest for and asked. Entrants had to estimate the 1 April 2023 snowpack, compared to long term average. Washington and Montana are happy; Arizona sad.

Our local ski hill has amazingly dedicated technicians that have been recording and organizing data for decades. Which is crystal clear from the amazing background wallpaper of their website. 2022-2023 on track to be a banner year.

My mom raised us to write thank-you notes. (full disclosure: I've gotten terrible at this; sorry, Mom). I did a recent event and got an inbox full of these the other day. Paper! Stamps! Go kids!

Congrats. For anyone not yet familiar with Rain or Snow, it is a great community science project to get involved with.

Mountain Rain or Snow has been so successful at collecting data demonstrating regional variation in the rain-snow threshold that NASA’s Citizen Science for Earth Systems Program is funding the project for an additional three years. Learn more at ow.ly/EqIV50LQcAj.
