If today's activity represents a regular pattern, it might be well detectable in North America.

Earth rotation compensation was switched on at 14:58. The spacecraft locked to a groundstation at 14:46. It went off at 15:07 and briefly unlocked before. Spektr-RG is circumpolar at my northern location and only hides behind forest for a view hours at low elevation.

Catch of the day is Spektr-RG, the x-ray and gamma telescope orbiting L2. I had lost it in November. This afternoon I found the x-band signal again with the help of optical observer Bill Gray who provided very accurate ephemeris.

JWST is cruising its way to SEL2. The fancy uplink patterns are gone. Distance is now 482.000 km and going out at 1.075 km/s.

The analysis is not very accurate mainly due to the instability of my s-band downconverter. It is not yet disciplined by my Rubidium atomic master clock as the rest of the station including the x-band system is. On the to-do list for next year.

Here is the JWST signal around the second correction burn MCC1b. reports it happened 00:20:00 - 0029:27. The little kink in the signal trace is visible at 00:20 and a rough evaluation gives an increase in outbound velocity of not more than 3 m/s.

JWST is still showing a strong signal, even some 2 dB stronger than last night. The spacecraft is in lock with a groundstation, indicated by the zig-zag uplink pattern. The second burn MCC1b is announced for tonight. Not sure if I will detect it, because acceleration will be low.

Couldn't resist to post this before I call it a day. JWST is in Orion tonight. The station will keep on tracking over night in automatic mode.

Do you find the signal? It is JUNO's x-band signal from Jupiter orbit. This is a new distance record for me: 827 million km. I must average the signal for 60 s to detect it. Today also helped the nice cold and dry weather. For this weak class of signals each tenth of a dB counts.

JWST keeps on showing a strong signal that is obviously in coherent lock to a groundstation. The uplink is Doppler compensated and the kinky frequency profile is the visible indication for that. DSS 54 isn't showing uplink and its power reading is some 30 dB too low.

Looks like the medium gain antenna is already in action?

I see the JWST s-band signal again and it much stronger than yesterday, despite the larger distance. Madrid's DSS 54 shows a very weak signal, -133 dBm in a 34 m dish. At this level I wouldn't be able to detect it. The DSS 54 reading seems at least 20 dB too low.

A nice display of Jupiter (still tracking JUNO), Saturn and Venus after sunset.

The x-band antenna is pointing to Jupiter. The cold dry weather helps to detect the faint signal from 827 million km.

Deep space cat just showed up at the station to take care of JUNO tracking. This is the most distant and also the weakest signal I can currently detect with some effort. She was also helpful with JWST tracking. JWST will rise here around 18 UTC.

I did an analysis of my downlink during the MCB. I see a frequency drop of roughly -120 Hz, corresponding to a change in range rate of -15.8 m/s. That means the outward speed increased by 15.8 m/s. The kinky uplink pattern doesn't help to determine the landmarks.

JWST completed its first midcourse correction burn. The little kink is visible at 00:50 when the burn started. According to the burn took 65 min. The spacecraft is now setting here and local interference is increasing. Thanks for the fun!

To avoid misunderstandings: this not at all looking like it was an issue. It just a frequency profile I haven't seen before in a spacecraft. I am sure this is being done on purpose.
