Reasonable people simply unfollow, mute, or block people who have unproductive tweets. The result is that it's hard for person tweeting to notice the silent majority of people who saw the trash fire and walked away when they recognized that engaging would only fuel its flames.

Thats great advice thank you! Would formalizing that signal into the medium work? A Twitter "rude", "pause", or something else button next to the heart button? Users could filter threads above a certain threshold of vitriol.

This signal *could* in fact be automatically extracted and offered to Alice. She actually *could* feel the disapproving glares on the internet.pic.twitter.com/jDHeJP7to7

Interesting! I had previously written about the problems that arise from there being so few *approving* looks on the Internet ( https://kajsotala.fi/2017/08/the-muted-signal-hypothesis-of-online-outrage/ … ) - social media reactions are a step in that direction but not the same. It hadn't occurred to me consider the reverse as well.

I often wonder what kind of norms will evolve in this relatively new social environment and how long it will take. For it to happen, there needs to be some sort of enforcement mechanism. A disapproving glare sounds much better than current methods.
-
What are the current methods?

I agree with this and it's definitely more effective in a given case. But on a larger scale, shouldn't we be encouraging more of the people with the emotional intelligence and good faith to even think to do this to engage publicly instead?
-
Like, anonymous charity is perhaps more noble on the individual level but public display of being charitable by people we admire is an excellent way to encourage more charity.
