"Your ownership of property at The Sea Ranch indicates a strong awareness of the special qualities of the place. After all, you didn’t have to come; you chose to come. For each owner this is a challenge and an opportunity."

One thing I found striking about sea ranch wasn't just the exteriors had a particular style but the interiors were all very similar as well. Wooden, warm, airy with lots of open vertical spaces. You don't normally see that much conformity in interiors too.

I was curious why the roofs were slanted like that and looked at part of their building codes http://www.tsra.org/photos/DM_v7-part4.pdf …. They’re really nice; they have great photography and explain/justify their decisions. Several pages are just a full size photograph with a quotation overlaid!

Back when people were poor and had to build with whatever was locally available architectural coherence naturally emerged. I too feel deeply conflicted about the question of whether socially imposed constraints are an adequate replacement of the lost economic ones.

This reminded me of Almere. It’s been several years since I’ve seen anything written about it, but it seemed like a fascinating mix of planning/economic constraints + individual freedom.https://www.mvrdv.nl/projects/32/almere-oosterwold …

also, the aesthetics extend to the most elegant animal mascot I’ve ever seen (recursive horns!) if you haven’t already, definitely check out the Sea Ranch exhibit at SFMOMA. Lots of original drawings and photos, provides great contextpic.twitter.com/dgKItlcW9C

This is how I feel about Parisian regulations on real estate too!

Paris is probably the best example of this, but Sea Ranch is so ethereal

Riffing off the main beat here, but... search space toward the next global peak is rocky + ridden with dead ends, and local peaks are themselves quite hard to find and execute on. I guess my aesthetic is to keep digging in the mud, but I can't fault a satisficer with superb taste

The entire island of Nantucket is like that. Almost every house is in the "Shingle style" & much decor is whaling themed. Took me a while to figure out it's a Quaker legacy that's still enforced long after the Quakers have gone & still defines the island's spirit of Simplicity.
