Devon  ☀️ in Montevideo soon! Retweeted Patrick McKenzie

I learned this lesson when I was a *high school intern* at NASA Ames and a writer misreported one of the projects I was working on that summer. Blew me away that after just a few months of up-close work I had more context than an adult whose job it was to report on it 😬https://twitter.com/patio11/status/1099847713598795776 …

"How much would a generically smart liberal arts graduate know about this subject within 2 weeks of hearing it existed?" successfully predicts about 98% of articles. (One can trivially cite the 2%, but they're not labeled "This is the one today which isn't mostly winging it.") https://twitter.com/greenwoodae/status/1099832077577379840 …

I realized that, if someone actually understands a complex thing, they're far more likely to want to work on it directly than to simply report on it. (There are notable exceptions, not a blanket rule.) Have not been able to read any industry-specific news the same way since.

The opposite also seems to be true. If we don't understand a subject we assume people who write about it have more knowledge than what they possess in reality. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gell-Mann_amnesia_effect …

Was this a science writer or a generic topics writer? Big distinction there

It's not just that. It's that gaining context *itself* takes N-squared time, between all of the different things adjacent to a topic. Then, to communicate that to M different audiences, is another multiplier. There is a "network Dunning-Kruger" that is lower than individual ones.

I don't necessarily disagree with your critique here, but 2 thoughts to add: 1. On the flip side, maybe scientists & engineers should get better at explaining their work to laypeople. NASA Intern You is one thing, but many "grown" tech folks are too resistant to work on this...

          2. The real prime directive of journalism is to hold powerful people/institutions accountable. Technical details are one thing, but we shouldn't lose sight of this high-level value, which is sorely need in the tech industry.
