    Devon  ☀️ in Montevideo soon!‏ @devonzuegel 8 Feb 2019

Lesson of the week: If you ever cone across a niche blog, article, or book that's really interesting or useful, email the author! It might be the first time they've heard from a reader

Every time I do this I think "they probably won't respond...". I did this 2x this week and—LIKE ALWAYS—both responded and were thrilled to hear their work was useful. Wonder how many times I have to do this before I internalize that the vast majority respond with enthusiasm...

I've done this 20+ times in the last year and every time received a friendly response. Really don't understand why my brain still expects rejection...

Want to be clear: this only works if you are actually sincere + bring something to the table in the conversation. If you email them with "Hi I want to talk to you bc I think you're cool" and no conversational handles to grasp onto, you're gonna have a bad time.

Yes! I've gotten a personal response more than half the time. Even met up and got lunch once!

I can’t stop thinking about this tonight. @tonystubblebine responding to a random HN post about interning in SF, @Case bringing me to lunch at rdio (RIP) where I met who would eventually be my contact for 📌, dropping out, etc. These all almost didn’t happen (or shouldn’t have!).

This is also true for niche/small OSS software projects. I often find small libraries etc. that saves me a ton of time, but I almost always forget to tell/thank the author.

Agreed. I wish there was a simple mechanism to like, appreciate or acknowledge the creator.
