Umm no. Even if there’s no creepiness/grope factor, there’s definitely a hidden negative cost you incur. More people than you probably realize just don’t like it, both men and women. I’m one of them. Seinfeld had an episode about it and also this:https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=iX3_L8z2uw4 …

To clarify: I don't just hug everyone indiscriminately. I go for it if they give cues that they'd be fine/happy with it
-
(You might recall I didn't go in for a hug when we met the other day
)

I always ask people, "Are you a hugger or a handshaker?" And then go with whatever they prefer.
-
I always go in for the hug. Many of my victims would probably prefer this approach though

No, you absolutely should worry about whether it'll come across as odd or creepy before hugging someone

I hugged my manager/mentor at the end of an 8-month internship. His response: “I don’t even hug my wife.” Thankfully, that was my last day.

Massively underrated disadvantage of being a woman in France, you have to put your cheeks against everyone’s face to do « la bise » every morning. No handshake option, just obligatory promiscuity.

But why would you WANT to do that?!
#HandshakeOrFistBumpPlease -
I have no problem with hugs or handshakes, but as a dude I ALWAYS let the female set our "terms of engagement". I'd rather be perceived and "stand-offish" rather than creepy!
#CreepySucks -
I'm a dude and I get genuine anxiety when people randomly decide to touch or hold my body. Still, at least you have no problem with it and ALWAYS 'let' 'the female' have an opinion. I'd rather be perceived as someone who you ask before you touch, regardless of gender.

Not an issue in Europe where you don’t hug but give kisses on the check instead
-
Except that the number of kisses ranges between 1 and 3, and sometimes between men too. When abroad, I started just waving from a distance to avoid awkwardness.

Men (especially in engineering) get real scared when I go in for the friendly hug. They get this look on their face like I’m wrapping them in an acid bath and my touch burns their delicate hetero bods.

This is a super power I lament not having.

I pretend to be European for just this reason.

Not creepy! :)
