Drowning in omicron news? My takeaway: highly transmissible, can re-infect those who’ve had covid or vaccinated but likely less severe illness. High attack rates at parties/dinners. Best to reduce close contacts heading into Xmas, avoid crowds & wear masks in shops/transport.

Prof, can I ask a dumb question. If this is milder and takes over as dominant strain... Is this actually a way to acclerate herd immunity? Vaccine boosters + milder illness.. Does it begin to push covid into the background a bit or the opposite closer towards cold/flu?

Sorry, last part should be does it push covid into the background in time as more aligned to cold/flu - less long covid etc? Or rather, is the way this has mutated of higher concern to you?

Has it been proved that disease is less severe for those NOT vaccinated and who HAVEN'T had Covid? IE children?

Less severe is relative. The risk for this group will in many cases be less than a boosted adult. The adult will have reduced their risk, but it likely significantly outweighed that of the child. Do you mean compared to wt/delta?

Good summary except No evidence from latest data in SA & Denmark that Omicron is less severe than Delta. See this from APPG todaypic.twitter.com/4fsNshi4EX

Scotland noted it but we still need more than a couple of studies to base judgement. Denmark is so much smaller and South Africa is a younger population. Our issue is even if less people die, the NHS cannot hold more Covid-19 patients.
