I’m increasingly convinced by data from countries across the world that we are underestimating the harms of keeping young kids out of school & overplaying their role in transmission. Children should be in school.https://twitter.com/j_g_allen/status/1355288448920399879 …

    Joseph Allen @j_g_allen
Study in Norway tested *all* contacts of 5 to 13 year olds with covid. They conclude "transmission of SARS-CoV-2 from children under 14 years of age was minimal in primary schools in Oslo and Viken, the 2 counties with the highest COVID-19 incidence"👇 https://www.eurosurveillance.org/content/10.2807/1560-7917.ES.2020.26.1.2002011 …

As everyone is interpreting my tweet in their own way (typical twitter), here’s my full take on schools with the required nuance & balance:https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2021/jan/12/when-should-uk-schools-reopen-safe-covid …

This wont be a popular tweet. Better to make the distinction between ages. Primary school? yes with additonal measures and facemasks for all teachers.

Yes; this is a tweet I wouldn't support. I have too many family members who are teachers!

        Vaccinate teachers first maybe?

No. Not at increased risk of death or serious disease compared to sales assistants for example. Prevention policies do a good enough job and community transmission a more important variable.https://www.cidrap.umn.edu/news-perspective/2021/01/three-studies-highlight-low-covid-risk-person-school …

Did you know that in the first lockdown an estimated, England only, additional 400,000 children suffered some form of abuse. Source educare training, safe guarding update module. Attached my thoughts on a way to open schools among other placespic.twitter.com/ivaSL7fpCs

Who runs a school? Adults! It's not and never has been the children that are the main problem. It is the amount of adults needed to run a school and keep it open. 🙈 can you please listen!!

The average age of a teacher is 39. The average 39 year old is very low risk. There will be teachers in their 50s and 60s as part of that average, but they’ll be vaccinated in turn. For the under 50s, they need to understand risk. https://coronavirus.data.gov.uk/details/deaths?areaType=nation%26areaName=England#card-deaths_within_28_days_of_positive_test_by_date_of_death_age_demographics_-_above_and_below_60 …

One day you’re saying we should go for zero COVID akin to Australia/NZ. Then the next you’re championing a super spreader event by asking for schools to reopen with massive baseline COVID infection numbers. 🤦‍♂️ I’ve been fully behind you every step of the way. But not with this.

Did Melbourne keep schools open during their lockdowns? Has New Zealand ever kept them open when they had strict restrictions in place when going for elimination? If not, then why on earth do you think it’ll work here?
