ICYMI my new piece in the Guardian on face masks. The clear message should be: I wear a mask to protect you, and you wear a mask to protect me. No one wants to see cases rise, or to have a second lockdown.https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/2020/jul/15/face-masks-england-second-wave-leaders …

I wonder if the woman in the mask will buy the thing she is touching.

How can anyone be confident when things are so unsafe that we have to wear masks? I'm not saying we *shouldn't* have to wear masks, just that the rule makes it clear those places are unsafe and should be avoided whenever possible.

Produce peer reviewed science no need to pat yourself on the back for an article that says basically nothing.

It does. It asks the rhetorical question 'why has it taken England so long?'. We know the answer. The answer should be on the conscience of every Tory and brexit voter.

The title should say "Why England took so long and why Wales is still waiting". I know its not your duty but I think its time the public health community singled out Wales as being an outlier in this matter. @CMOWales has his own views but it will risk many lives.

Atherton has worked in several countries in Africa, was former deputy cmo of Novo Scotia in Canada so I am suprised at his resistance to learning form other countries. I have met him and found him to be a kind man. I just wish he realised the mistakes being made.
