Beggars belief England Govt had not made face masks mandatory in public. The science is overwhelming 
SARS-CoV-2 will burn itself out if it has no other hosts to transmit to. If people keep their distance from others, use face coverings when necessary, get tested if having any symptoms (however mild) & comply with tracing and isolation, it’s possible to drive it out.

NZ have basically done it. A few cases here and there are to be expected. If they avoid a recurrence of community transmission then that will be victory.

But they're not. I've seen people ignore all advice from the beginning, intentionally breach 2 metre rule out and about because they 'believe it's all nonsense '. Unless the distancing/mask/gatherings rules are ENFORCED, people will continue to spread.

I agree. You cant see the virus and you cant see stupid. Several times when Ive politely asked someone to move back theyve said something like 'are you the social distancing police?' No just trying not to die or kill anyone I reply
