Thread on schools: schools should re-open as soon as possible but must be integrated into 'test/trace/isolate/support' strategies & with full transparency to teachers & parents about the trade-offs involved & large scientific uncertainty.

Big questions around severe inflammatory disorder in kids several weeks after exposure to COVID that both New York & Italy have reported. Problem is we don't have a denominator (how many kids exposed) so can suggest it is rare but do not know *how* rare.

Local-level data is needed by neighborhood to inform parents/teachers/council officials on levels of transmission & daily number of new cases to inform decisions about schools opening. This puts information directly into hands of key members of the educational community.

There will never be no risk. There is a risk associated with daily driving & cycling- but parents/teachers/school heads want to know the level of risk to make data-driven, local decisions. Large nat'l decisions not optimal in these situations given variance within a country.

Also find it astounding that govt blaming key workers: saying health workers not using PPE properly & implying teachers don’t care about kids. These are people who did not pursue careers for money or power but for improving society. They just want to be listened to & protected.

The problem is this strategy does not exist and can you imagine it will be ready this side of the summer holidays?

Why doesn’t it exist though, that’s the question.

Would you say they should only test those with symptoms (which appears to be current policy? I worry about asymptomatic transmission

If only the UK Govt had looked at the evidence earlier of TTI in countries like South Korea,we wouldn't be having this conversation now... "Herd Immunity" was the policy they went with and still do today, incredible negligence on their part.
