Part of my job is speaking truth to power. And the UK govt is (in my view) getting it wrong. Other countries have shown speed is crucial. There is a middle path between complete shutdown & carrying on as normal.

Middle path: 1. Increase testing & contact tracing (e.g. China, Singapore, S. Korea model) 2. Stop large public gatherings 3. Stop non-essential travel 4. Encourage employers to allow home working 5. Over-70s & those w/pre-existing conditions need clearer advice on risk.

Why do we give up so easily on contact tracing & stop mild testing? Crucial is buying time for health services, also for treatment & vaccine. Unless we're accepting that many elderly & vulnerable people will die. Which I don't see any doctor or health professional agreeing to.

this seems so obviously right for the UK; the costs seem comparatively minor and the benefits so significant...

Those 'minor costs' are people dying who need not have. We are on an Italy trajectory and this does nothing to take us off that.

Though the number of tests being undertaken is increasing. In areas where it is not available and won’t be in time, we should be intensifying screening by case definition as well. Get those thermometers out.

In my opinion as someone with a lot of behavioural science experience - this would be the path I'd choose. People respond well to clarity.

I don't know how over 70s need more risk advice than seeing the chart showing ~15% fatality rate. It damn sure got my attention. 😀

Absolutely agreeing with you. Stopping testing of mild cases so early is a mistake and testing will need to be ramped up ANYWAY at the end of it to avoid further waves.
