        At a much lower level — this puts an entire (modified) kernel into user space instead of simply translating the Win32 API.

        Interestingly, the kernel binary looks to be independent from the host OS as well, the loader (bin/sqlservr) bringing it up.

        I ran into apt-get install problems with gdb and openssl. Looking like they will not be game breakers though

        Interesting. @msdev doesn't have realpath as a apt-get requirement so sqlservr-setup fails to populate PARENT_DIR.

        Overall ruling... don't try to install SQL Server on Ubuntu on Windows Subsystem for Linux.

        IIRC, at the time Microsoft sold the Windows runtime as a product - there were 3rd party programs that used it.
