At a much lower level — this puts an entire (modified) kernel into user space instead of simply translating the Win32 API.

Interestingly, the kernel binary looks to be independent from the host OS as well, the loader (bin/sqlservr) bringing it up.

@msdev doesn't have realpath as a apt-get requirement so sqlservr-setup fails to populate PARENT_DIR. -

@Aelkus old versions of Excel for DOS likewise included the win runtime -
IIRC, at the time Microsoft sold the Windows runtime as a product - there were 3rd party programs that used it.
