The price of drugs (which should be gov't negotiated) is important but small compared to hospitals ($1.2T/yr) & administrative waste (> $850B/yr). Focusing on these 2 categories & the runaway workforce growth is key to dealing w/ cost of + providing for all

"SIM swap" attacks have been in the news for years. They’ve enabled serious financial crimes and even a hack of the Twitter CEO's account. We spent 6 months researching how vulnerable wireless accounts are to these attacks. Our draft study is out today.

What do you mean my analysis isn’t reproducible? I ran a query five month ago on a redshift table that’s now deprecated, wrote a notebook in Python 2 to pre-process the data, and used a DNN implementation from a GitHub repo that’s since been deleted. What’s not reproducible?

A General and Adaptive Robust Loss Function They propose an analytical function that can represent a family of well known robust cost functions just with a single parameter (alpha). Alpha lets you walk through L2, huber, cauchy, tukey and more.

This is not new, but so helpful. "anytime a large number of qualified, intelligent researchers are pushed out of a field, it's not just those individuals but the entire scientific endeavor that suffers." Excerpts below.

In the last few years, it has become so obvious to me that weak theories are a huge problem in science. My own interests have shifted substantially from merely improving estimators for my favorite problems. I would much rather demonstrate what the right questions ought to be. 1/

Since I got interested in neuroscience, I was always fascinated by the beautiful structure of neurons. Look at the amacrine cells, they are WOW fractal! We have a chance to know more about their developments thanks to my great collaborators👏. Swing by our poster, Sat 1 pm

A prize to be expected. Banerjee, Duflo & Kremer rely on key tenets of mainstream Econ. While founded on behavioral econ and assumption that tweaks to individual actions can alleviate global poverty, their work is often wrongly presented as purely empirical, objective & radical.

That's 100% correct, although I've also seen centralization going too far where data teams have super unclear mandate (like sprinkling AI dust onto the org). Decent post:

Here is a fundamental question in neuroscience: if you are saying a neuron has some role or function, how robust should that be to context?
