I opened to a random page--it was parking generation for adult cabarets (yes)--and found this. Two observations, a regression line with suppressed coefficients and diagnostics, but parking rates nevertheless predicted to two decimal places.

There are hard parts to getting more people to walk and bike like adding separated facilities and taking road space from cars and then there are easy parts like “put bike racks in obvious places next to entrances” and it baffles me when cities don’t do the easy parts.

Medical advances in the treatment of cystic fibrosis have been nothing short of extremely awesome. When cystic fibrosis was first described in 1938, life expectancy was 6 months. Nowadays, it’s >40 years for newborns and it keeps getting higher as new treatments are discovered.

A cool thing about people who work for the government is part of the job description involves answering your random questions, and if they don't do a good job answering, you can file a public records request to get better answers

California: we legalized mass timber in 2021, but there aren't many projects going forward. The transport and material costs for mass timber from out-of-state is high. Also we have lots of forest that needs to be thinned. Guess it will always be a luxury product :( Oregon:

Neighbor in Menlo Park was remodeling her home, and wanted an artist studio. The city's parking requirements, though, required she outfit the garage (concrete floor, etc) and then she illegally converted it to a studio space. Meanwhile, city has a 2030 goal to be carbon neutral

On my stereotypical suburban block in sac I would say about 60% of peoples cars are regularly parked on the street. My two car garage was just for cars until my parents decided to leave me all of their junk when they moved out of state

The revealed preference is that people prefer more living space to covered car parking but we keep mandating space that isn’t great as living space (concrete floor, inadequate insulation)

Would love to see stats on the % of Californians who use the garage in their detached single family house for storage, or a “man cave” or w/e & then park their car(s) in the driveway.
