I know there’s a lot going of urgent stuff going on, but this nuclear treaty with Russia potentially going off the rails? Very bad. This is the last restraint on the world’s two biggest nuclear stockpiles. If we lose it, nothing else is going to matter.

That's not a future I'm confident we survive. The international community needs to keep the pressure on. Putin must be made to understand there's no room for playing games with this treaty, and the only way to avoid "strategic defeat" is by withdrawing his forces from Ukraine.

Holding this treaty hostage is a desperate and dangerous gambit by Russia that puts the whole world on a path to nuclear anarchy: a future where binding constraints on civilization-ending weapons and transparency are gone, and norms of voluntary restraint are weak or nonexistent.

New START limits US-Russian nuclear arsenals and provides a critical window into capabilities and intentions. It gives US inspectors access to Russian nuclear facilities, and vice versa, to ensure compliance. Nobody can afford for this treaty to collapse (including Russia).
