At least 75% of people incarcerated in SF jail are awaiting a trial. They haven't been convicted of anything. Many of them didn't commit any crime and get released after a few years of waiting. Hope it never happens to you.

You are painting a picture of mostly innocent people walking down the street and getting picked up by cops and put in jail for years. Police arrested people on probable cause so the incarcerated people are the ones that put themselves in that situation.
