    Monday morning tips: 1) Focus on starting, not finishing. - The idea of having to finish a pile of work only brings stress (stress --> procrastination). 2) Start small - If you can't work for 4 hours, work for 2, or 1, or 30 minutes, or 5 minutes. Every minute counts. Start.

    We tweet about distraction, but in the following talk, distraction is described as a symptom of a deeper problem - overstimulation. If stimulate your brain with likes, points, or news often, any time without them feels bad. You begin to seek distraction.

    Whichever social platform or video game is most distracting for you, take a 24 hour break from it sometimes, ideally at least once a week. Let your mind rest and reset. During this break, you might find that you suddenly have time for things you've been putting off for a while.

    Focus on how you can start, not on how much you have to finish. "I have so much to do" "It's going to take a long time" "It's a lot of work" These thoughts only make it harder for us. Use instead: "Where can I start in the next 5 minutes?" Or: "What can I get done today?"

    Long to-do list --> overwhelmed by quantity --> procrastination. Vague to-do list --> overwhelmed by ambiguity and uncertainty --> procrastination. Timeless to-dos --> not sure why do X now or what to do first --> procrastination. Keep to-do lists short, clear, and timely.

    Remember: in the morning, focus on creating momentum. If you're motivated, great jump into a high-priority task! If you're not motivated, take smalls steps. Answer an email, review a doc, flip through slides... When you're not motivated, do small tasks to generate momentum.

    When you catch yourself getting distracted and want to stop, don't try to jump straight to work. Work isn't designed to be fun like games or social media. You'll work for a minute or 2 and then bounce back to distractions. Instead, take a 10 minute break to reset. Then do work.

    If you're having trouble starting, remember this: something > nothing. The first draft, sketch, design - they might suck, but that's okay. You can improve it later. Focus on getting your ideas out of your head first. Then refine and improve.
