I think anyone should choose their own goals based on what they enjoy doing and chasing after. Anything is fine as long as you don’t get into other people’s way and don’t judge others for their goals.

All of these measures of success are signals you're "doing something that actually matters". But pouring your life into moving the metrics is an excellent way to ensure you do nothing that actually does.

The tangible things will always matter. How much importance we attach to them is something else entirely. Would I like to have ten top tier publications? Sure. Would I trade in my life experiences of the past 5 years for these things. Absolutely not
