Shamed for speaking Spanish. Shamed for not speaking Spanish. Shamed for speaking “imperfectly.” Shamed for not being taught. Shamed for having an accent. Shamed by your own, by others. Shamed for trying. You don’t have to prove your Latinidad to anybody. We exist. Punto.

We don't need further engagement with "classic titles," we need a top-to-bottom change in the canon, in publishing, in education, in syllabi, in the structures that enforce this white supremacist canon.

  11. Favorite parts: Shakira on the drums. J. Lo’s daughter singing (!). J. Lo’s entrance (!!!). Bad Bunny (ahh!). J. Balvin’s “Mi gente”—so much fire 🔥

  12. And for the record, full transparency, J. Lo means a lot to me and so many Latinx folks. Out of that love—and love for community—I want her to grow, like I want us to grow, like I, too, want to grow. We can hold more than one feeling at the same time.

  13. And yes, absolutely a missed opportunity to include AfroLatinx artists and stand in solidarity with Black artists who declined to participate. So many conflicting feelings of rooting for two iconic Latinas and also, wanting us to do better.

  14. To see the PR flag attached to the American flag on such a big stage was wild. Considering Puerto Rico is a possession of the U.S. Considering Hurricane Maria. Considering the debt. Considering neglect. What a missed opportunity to speak out. To stand up.

  15. Waving a Puerto Rican flag is great, but if pride doesn’t come with solidarity or liberation then what are we really doing?

Happy for all the books getting included on these Latinx Lit Lists and also keenly aware of how few Black Latinx folks get included in "The Latinx Experience"

Earlier this year, I hopped into a rental car and spent the day in Marysville, Calif. with discussing his life in the agroindustrial Central Valley, his passion for poetry and his former life as an undocumented immigrant.
