Hah, makes more sense. Does WebGL have an equivalent of persistent mapped buffers nowadays? (ARB_buffer_storage)

Don't think so. And even though WebGL 2.0 adds PBOs, I think a lot of the optimizations available on native don't have the same effect on web because of all the memory safety involved in sharing memory between the GPU and the browser.
