I'm surprised your compiler is even keeping that NULL check. Usually since you deref the compiler assumes != NULL and optimizes out the check.
This is disassembly from something compiled with VC 7.1; I checked and sure enough it is unable to elide the null check in this situation. I suppose optimizers in 2003 can be forgiven though, I am not sure what level of analysis they were really doing at that point.
