The large majority of open sourced projects see very little external contributions. The ones who do have usually made fostering contributions one of their priorities. Arguably > 50% of my contributions to Dolphin were "making sure others can contribute efficiently", not emu work.

Many projects also haven't been great at managing their technical debt. Decisions like "my software is 32 bit only" or "we're going to use WX as our stdlib in emulation code" that are still being held onto in 2020 when really you should have made migration a priority 5 years ago.

though that comes back to the student thing. when I was a student, I was able to enjoy the tedious work of ripping out technical debt from PHP now I work full-time on… sometimes ripping out technical debt from [redacted]? it's much less appealing and I have much less time
