I think it's especially key to understand that for emulators. A lot of the work on emus requires long periods of focused times, something that's really hard to do as soon as you start getting a full time job. Dolphin is basically powered by a renewing pool of students.

Many projects also haven't been great at managing their technical debt. Decisions like "my software is 32 bit only" or "we're going to use WX as our stdlib in emulation code" that are still being held onto in 2020 when really you should have made migration a priority 5 years ago.
